1st Cavalry Regiment [also called 12th Regiment] was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. it was the successor to Thomas Claiborne's 6th Confederate Cavalry Regiment which included H. Clay King's Kentucky Cavalry Battalion. Company A of the regiment was always detached because it served as escort for Generals Van Dorn and Forrest. The unit was assigned to General Wharton's, Colonel W. B. Wade's, then to General Humes' and W. W. Allen's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. One of General Wheeler's best cavalry commands, it fought at Murfreesboro, Thompson's Station, Franklin, Chickamauga, and Blue Springs, After being involved in the Atlanta Campaign it was transferred to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, and aided in the defense of Savannah. The regiment disbanded prior to the surrender in May, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels John T. Cox and H. Clay King, Lieutenant Colonel C. S. Robertson, and Major Henry C. Bate.
