3rd Cavalry Regiment
3rd Cavalry Regiment [also called 11th Regiment]
was organized during the early summer of 1862 by consolidating
the seven company 11th (Estes') Alabama Cavalry with two companies
from Georgia and one from Tennessee. In December the unit contained
448 effectives and during the war served under General Wharton,
Colonel W. B. Wade, then Generals Humes, W. W. Allen, and R. H.
Anderson. It fought at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Campbell's
Station, and later was involved in the Atlanta Campaign, the defense
of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas. The regiment disbanded
prior to the surrender of the Army of Tennessee. Its commanders
were Colonels W. N. Estes, James R. Howard, and P. H. Rice, and
Lieutenant Colonels F. M. Corn and John McCaskill.
