6th Cavalry Regiment
6th Cavalry Regiment [also called Kentucky Mounted
Rangers] was organized during the early spring of 1862. Most of
its members were from Kentucky, but a number were from Alabama
and Tennessee. It included what was formerly H. Clay King's Kentucky
Battalion. The unit was assigned to the Army of the Mississippi
and skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky. During June, 1862, it
contained 575 men and later became the 1st Confederate Cavalry
Regiment. Captains Thomas Claiborne and John F. Lay were temporary
commanders as colonel. Other field officers assigned to the regiment
were Lieutenant Colonel James A. Pell, and Majors H. Clay King
and M. J. Wicks.
