Dearing's Cavalry Regiment
Dearing's Cavalry Regiment [also called 8th Regiment]
was formed during the winter of 1863-1864 with men from Georgia,
North Carolina, and Virginia. It was assigned to the Department
of North Carolina and Southern Virginia, and later J. Dearing's
Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The regiment was involved
in numerous engagements south of the James River, then on July
11, 1864, ordered to disband. Five companies were transferred
to the 15th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry, three to the 8th
Georgia Cavalry, and two were added to the 42nd Virginia Battalion
which became the 24th Regiment Virginia Cavalry. Colonel James
Dearing was in command.
