1st Infantry Regiment
Roster
1st Infantry Regiment [also called 1st Georgia
(Confederate) Regiment] was organized in the fall of 1861 with
men from Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama. It was formerly
the 36th (Villepigue's) Georgia Infantry Regiment. The unit was
involved in the bombardment of Pensacola, then was assigned to
H. R. Jackson's and in 1865, R. H. Henderson's Brigade, Army of
Tennessee. It participated in the arduous campaigns of the army
from Chickamauga to Atlanta, moved with Hood into Tennessee, and
ended the war in North Carolina. In the fight at Chickamauga it
lost forty-six percent of the 181 engaged, and totaled 138 men
and 108 arms in December, 1863. Many were disabled in Tennessee
and only a handful surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers
were Colonels George A. Smith and John B. Villepigue, Lieutenant
Colonels Jacob W. Aderhold and James C. Gordon, and Majors Elijah
M. Dodson and William S. Lovell.
