1st Special Cavalry Battalion

1st Special Cavalry Battalion completed its organization during the early spring of 1864 with men who had seen prior service under General J. H. Morgan. It served in B. W. Duke's Brigade, Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee, and skirmished in various conflicts in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. In January 1865 only 97 men were present and it soon disbanded. The unit was commanded by Colonel William W. Ward and Lieutenant Colonel R. A. Alston.
