8th (Mitchell's) Infantry Regiment was organized in January, 1863, from Mitchell's 7th and Frazier's Missouri Infantry Battalions. The unit was assigned to D. M. Frost's, Drayton's, J. B. Clark's, and C. S. Mitchell's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department. It served in Louisiana and Arkansas and reported 10 killed and 66 wounded at Pleasant Hill and 7 killed and 22 wounded at Jenkins' Ferry. The regiment was included in the surrender in June, 1865. The field officers were Colonel Charles S. Mitchell, Lieutenant Colonel John W. Smizer, and Major J. W. Hill.
