Oak Hill Cemetery

Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia

Established in 1833, Oak Hill Cemetery is a 60 acre property with over 12,000 gravesites. Located just a few blocks north of downtown Newnan, it is the final resting place for some of the county’s most prominent citizens which include two Georgia governors, and several congressmen.  Newnan was a hospital city during the Civil War, and Oak Hill is the burial ground for 270 soldiers representing all Confederate states.

268 Confederate soldiers, most of whom died of wounds or disease in the several Confederate hospitals located in Newnan.  Some were killed in the battle fought south of here, on July 30, 1864.  Due to the efficiency of the local hospitals, only two are "Unknown."  Most of these men were veterans of many hard fought battles.  Every state in the Confederacy is represented in these burials.
