The Federals tried him as a spy and sent him "to be hung by the neck until he be dead" on 12/21/62. Pathetic letters from his family and sweetheart failed, but a letter from R.E. Lee got him regular POW status. Irvine was finally exchanged from Old Capitol Prison on 5/13/63. POW again at Hanover, 6/30/63; exchanged from Pt. Lookout, 4/30/64.  JETT, WILLIAM STORKE: b. 12/2/1846. enl. 6/16/64 in Co. C. Severely wded. on 6/29/64, fighting the Wilson raiders, by a gunshot wound in the abdomen. The ball lodged in his intestines and he wars kept off duty to the end of the war. As a result of contact with the fleeing John Wilkes Booth (whether the contact was innocent or not remains under debate), Jett was arrested in Westmoreland Co. on 5/1/65; he was released from Old Capitol Prison on 5/31/65. d. 7/17/1884 of apoplexy in Williamsburg. bur. Fredericksburg Confederate Cem.

JOHNSON, W.R.: This man is shown as Capt. and AQM of the regiment on one pay voucher. As is frequently the case with departmental staff officers of the 9th Cavalry, there is virtually no extant service record on this fellow.

 JOHNSON, WYATT: enl. 3/1/62 in Co. E. Wded. by gunshot in left hand, May 1864 (reached Richmond hospital on 5/22/64). Present at 10/1/64 final roll.

 JOHNSTON, W.V.: Asst. Surgeon of the regiment, relieved of duties on 6/12/62, due to the unfavorable report of the Army Medical Board, despite the fact that Johnston had been a physician for 18 years.

 JONES, A.: Member of Co. E. His only record is covered by five hospital slips, which state he he was enlisted in June 1862. He was in Chimborazo Hosp. with scabies in March 1864 and on 5/15/64 with a gunshot wound to his left foot, from which he returned to duty on 7/6/64.

 JONES, AUBREY HOWARD: enl. 6/10/61 in Co. H, as Sgt. Reduced to Pvt. at his own request, 8/9/61. Absent on leave, Nov.‑Dec. 1861. Absent on special duty, March‑April 1862. Jones owed the government $5 by sentence of court martial in April 1862. He put in a substitute at about that time. in July 1864, Jones was endeavoring to raise a company of artillery.

Wded. and taken prisoner at Upperville (lung wound). It is apparently Lt. Col. Lewis of whom John Dooley of the 1st Va. Inf. writes at length in his account of prison life (Dooley, p. 149‑50). Lewis resigned as a result of his wounds, effective 5/9/64. d. 7/25/1883.
