Military Institute Cadets of Lexington

Military Institute Cadets of Lexington, Virginia, were ordered to report to General R. Ransom in May, 1864. With four companies, which included 247 men, the battalion engaged the Federals at New Market on May 15. In this fight the cadets lost 10 killed and 47 wounded. Later they served in the trenches of Richmond, then in November returned to Lexington to resume their studies. Lieutenant Colonel Scott Shipp was in command.
