The one existent muster roll for the 198th Milita was dated July 25, 1863. Many of the men listed on the roster had the notation, "Exempt by local board." One may assume this means exempted by the local draft board or medical board, but this is not entirely clear. The notation "exempt" by a man's name indicates that this person was exempted by the local board. Colonel John R. Compton was in command of the regiment at the time the muster was made. No other notation nor company affiliations were noted.
