Louis Eugene Yorke

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A native of Salem, New Jersey, he was appointed as a Captain during the Civil War with the 13th U.S. Infantry, Regular Army, in 1861. He was promoted on July 4, 1863 to Brevet Major for "gallant and meritorious service during the Siege of Vicksburg". He was then appointed as an Assistant Inspector General and commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel. He also received two promotions for Brevet Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. He resigned on November 21, 1865 and later died from heart complications in Cincinnati, Ohio when he was 40 years old. Entombed in Griffin Taylor's vault at the cemetery, his name cannot be seen from the outside. (bio by: K Guy)
