In the fall of 1861, authority was given William Jones, of Rockport, to enlist and organize the Sixty-Second Regiment in the First Congressional District, and rendezvous it at Rockport. The attempt to raise the regiment being unsuccessful, the companies and detachments of recruits were on the 26th of February, 1862, consolidated with the Fifty-Third Regiment, then organizing. Col. Jones was made Lieut. Colonel of the Fifty-Third. The men thus transferred served with that organization until the expiration of its term of service.
