Organized by consolidation of Jackson Heavy as Companies "E," "F," "G" and "H" and 2nd Jackson Heavy as Companies "A," "B," "C" and "D" March 6, 1862. 6th Battalion Heavy Artillery (3rd Battalion Black River Heavy Artillery) assigned as Companies "I," "K," "L" and "M" December 31, 1862. First 8 Companies served as garrison in New York Harbor at Forts Hamilton, LaFayette, Wood, Gibson, Richmond and Schuyler, March 11 to May 27, 1862. Moved to Baltimore, Md., May 27 and duty there until April 19, 1864. Companies "A" and "F" detached at Harper's Ferry, W. Va., June 19 to September 15, 1862, participating in actions at Point of Rocks and Berlin September 4-5 (Company "A"). Point of Rocks September 7 (Co. "A"). Defense of Harper's Ferry September 12-15. Maryland Heights September 12-13. Bolivar Heights September 14. Surrendered September 15. Paroled September 16, and rejoined Regiment at Baltimore. Regiment lost during service 90 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 295 Enlisted men by disease. Total 386.

Organized at Sackett's Harbor, N. Y., and mustered in September 11, 1862. Left State for Washington, D. C., September 20, 1862. Duty in the Defences of that city till December, 1862. Transferred to 5th New York Heavy Artillery December 31, 1862, as Companies "I," "K," "L" and "M." (See 5th New York Heavy Artillery.)
