An organization, with a sufficient number of companies for a regiment, was effected under the direction of General Canby, in charge of United States troops, in December, 1862, but before commissions had been issued to the field officers, seven of these companies were detailed for special duty, and only three companies, the rolls of which are here given, remained together. They performed provost duty, in the city of Philadelphia, without field or staff officers, except Assistant Surgeon. They were mustered out of service on the 29th of September, and 21st of October, 1863, at Philadelphia.

Organized at Philadelphia October 29, 1862, to January 21, 1863. On provost duty at Philadelphia entire term. Mustered out September 29 to October 21, 1863.
