Oct. 14
About 8:30 a. m., October 14, the 42d Division came abreast of the right of the 328th Infantry; that regiment then attacked. The 1st Battalion advanced slowly in conjunction with the 42d Division. About 10 a. m. the right of the battalion was impeded by troops of the 42d Division who entered the zone of action of the 328th Infantry to attack St. Georges from the southwest. Shortly before noon these troops withdrew to their own zone of action. About noon a detachment of Company D succeeded in getting through the wire of the Kriemhild Stellung about 800 meters southwest of St. Georges, while portions of Company C were about 500 meters to the south. During the early afternoon Company B was placed in line on the left, and attacked across the St. Georges St. juvin road. Upon reaching the ridge overlooking Ravin aux Pierres heavy fire was received, and the advance was stopped about 1:30 p. m. A line was formed along the St. Georges St. juvin road. In the late afternoon the 2d Battalion relieved the 1st Battalion in the front line. The 2d Battalion withdrew its right from the road to gain contact with the 42d Division on the divisional boundary 1 kilometer south of St. Georges. This line was maintained during the night. Contact was secured with the 325th Infantry. [2, 63, 118, 130, 131]
In the center, the 325th infantry attacked about 10 a. m., with the 1st Battalion in assault. By 11:15 a. m. the wire of the Kriemhild Stellung had been pierced but, as heavy fire was received from the right, the troops withdrew to the St. Georges St. Juvin road. At this time the support companies of the 1st Battalion were passing through a gas barrage about 750 meters to the rear. In the afternoon attempts were made to advance into Ravin aux Pierres, but about 3 p. m. the advanced elements were forced to fall back to the reverse slope of the ridge north of the St. Georges St. Juvin road. Here they dug in, with the 3d Battalion in close support. A local counterattack was beaten off about 5 p. m. and consolidation of the position continued. [2, 100, 118, 132]
Liaison was maintained throughout the day between the 325th and 328th Infantry Regiments. There was a gap between the left of the 325th Infantry, on the ridge south of Ravin aux Pierres, and the right of the 326th on the St. Georges St. Juvin road. During the late afternoon this gap was closed by the 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, from division reserve. [133]
On the left, the 326th Infantry attacked at 8:30 a.m. In the course of the advance, the 3rd Battalion was reinforced from time to time by portions of the 2d Battalion, until the two were practically merged. The attack of the 77th Division did not succeed in crossing the Aire during the morning. Consequently, when the 3d Battalion attempted to extend west to the divisional boundary, it received heavy fire from St. Juvin, which had not been taken. About 10 a. m., two platoons of Company K, a detachment of the Machine-Gun Company, 325th Infantry, and portions of Company A, 320th Machine-Gun Battalion raided the eastern edge of the town. They silenced machine guns in that part of the town east of the ridge, but did not remain in the village. By noon the 3d Battalion had organized a line along the St. Georges St. Juvin road. During the afternoon portions of the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, and detachments of the Machine-Gun Company, 326th Infantry, reinforced the left of this line against a threatened counterattack from St. Juvin. Upon request, artillery fire was placed on the northern edge of the town and the hostile trenches north of the St. Georges St. Juvin road. Attempts were made to cross Ravin aux Pierres. Although a slight advance was made, the ground gained could not be held, and a line for the night was established along the St. Georges St. Juvin road. The right was in contact with liaison groups of the 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry; the left in contact with the 77th Division about 200 meters east of St. Juvin. About 3:30 p. m. the 1st Platoon of Company A, 320th Machine-Gun Battalion entered St. Juvin and captured prisoners. It took position in the German trenches about 250 meters north of the eastern part of the town, in front of the line established north of St. Juvin by the 77th Division, but not in contact with any other unit. It maintained this position during the night of October 14-15. About 5 p. m. the 1st Battalion, 326th Infantry, was relieved, in its position between Marcq and Martincourt Ferme, by the 77th Division. The battalion crossed the river near Martincourt Ferme, and went into division reserve. [2, 93, 114, 118, 134, 135]
St. Juvin was entered by the 77th Division from the southeast at 3:45 p. m. Troops of that division, after mopping up the town, held positions for the night in and to the north thereof, and extending east along the St. Georges St. Juvin road, where contact was secured with the 326th Infantry. [2, 136, 137]
At 5 p. m. the I Corps issued field orders, which were amended at 7 p. m., announcing that the last prepared enemy position, the Kriemhild Stellung, had been broken on the fronts of the I, III and V Corps, and that the operation had thus become one of open warfare. It ordered the attack resumed on October 15, and established the line, Imécourt Alliépont - northern edge of Bois des Loges as the objective. Upon reaching the objective, vigorous exploitation was to be carried out to the front, and contact maintained with the enemy. The 82d Division was directed to continue to support and protect the left of the 42d Division. The left boundary of the 82d Division was changed to the line, St. Juvin (excl.) Côte 182 (excl.) eastern edge of Bois des Loges thence north to Résille Ferme, about 4 kilometers north of Bois des Loges.[138, 139]
At 9 p. m. the 82d Division issued field orders announcing H-hour as 7:30 a. m., October 15. The attack was to continue to the corps objective without a halt. The artillery preparation was to commence at 9 p. m., October 14. The barrage was to stand 300 meters in front of the line of departure for five minutes, commencing at 7:25 a. m. It was then to advance 1 kilometer and cease. The two regimental machine-gun companies of the 163d Infantry Brigade were to constitute a part of the division reserve and execute long-range fire. [140, 141]
The 164th Infantry Brigade, on the right, designated the combined 1st and 2d Battalions, 328th Infantry, as the assault echelon; and the 3d Battalion, 328th Infantry, reinforced by a company of 100 men of the 327th Infantry, as support. The remainder of the 327th Infantry was to be brigade reserve. The 163d Infantry Brigade, on the left, attached Company C, 320th Machine-Gun Battalion, to the 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry, the assault battalion of that regiment. It ordered the 1st Battalion, 326th Infantry, with Company D, 320th Machine-Gun Battalion, attached, to pass through the 3d Battalion, 326th Infantry, and attack with the 3d Battalion in support. The 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, was designated as division reserve, [142, 143]
Oct. 15
The 82d Division had penetrated the positions of the German 45th Reserve Division between St. Georges and St. Juvin on October 14; and the combined operations of the 82d and 77th Divisions had driven troops of this German division from St. Juvin during the late afternoon, with heavy losses in prisoners. To regain its position between St. Georges and St. Juvin, and in the town of St. Juvin, the German 45th Reserve Division planned a counterattack, supported by artillery, to be launched on the morning of October 15. The German 90th Brigade, 45th Reserve Division, whose sector extended roughly across the fronts of the American 325th and 326th Infantry Regiments and west to the vicinity of Moulin d'en Bas, attacked about 6:45 a. m. with the 210th, 211th and 212th Infantry Regiments in line from east to west. It was assisted on its left by the Bavarian 15th Division. The 210th and 212th Infantry Regiments were relatively strong, but the 211th Infantry, whose sector had included St. Juvin, had lost nearly half of its strength on October 14. The main attacks were delivered east of St. Juvin by the 210th Infantry against the American 325th and 326th Infantry Regiments, and across the Agron River in the vicinity of the railroad yards northwest of St. Juvin. [144]
About 4 a. m. the Machine-Gun Company, 325th Infantry, had been ordered to take positions on Côte 182 to support the attack scheduled for the morning. This company proceeded to Côte 182, passing northeast of St. Juvin and in front of the elements of the 77th Division on Côte 182. It took up a position near the crest of the hill, in contact with the detachment of Company A, 320th Machine-Gun Battalion, which had remained on the hill during the night of October 14-15. The morning was foggy. About dawn the company helped beat off a considerable force of the German 212th Infantry which advanced from the northwest over the hill. Fire was received from the attacking troops, from the railroad yards northwest of St. Juvin and from the southwestern portion of the town itself, but the positions on Côte 182 were maintained throughout the day, in front of the infantry line of the 77th Division. After midnight, October 15, infantry of the 78th Division came up to relieve this company, but portions of it remained in position, as the left flank of the 82d Division was exposed, and an attack from the west was feared. The detachment of Company A, 320th Machine-Gun Battalion, rejoined its battalion. [2, 145]
On the extreme right, the 328th Infantry held the front line with its 2d Battalion, reinforced by Company A, with the remainder of the regiment in support. About 7 a. m., while the hostile counterattack was falling upon the regiments in the center and on the left, the enemy penetrated south of the St. Georges St. Juvin road as far as the wood in the saddle between the two highest points of Hill 230, but was repulsed by support troops of the 1st Battalion, 328th Infantry. No direct attack was made on the front of the 328th Infantry. However, this regiment did not advance during the day, owing to the failure of the 42d Division, to its right, to advance. The left of the 42d Division remained in the vicinity of point 206. During the afternoon an outpost of about 75 men was placed in trenches along the St. Georges St. Juvin road about 1 kilometer southwest of St. Georges. At 5:55 p. m. the 164th Infantry Brigade ordered the 327th Infantry to relieve the 328th Infantry in the front line. The movement started after dark and was completed by 10 p. m. The consolidated 1st and 2d Battalions, 327th Infantry, took over the front lines formerly held by the 328th Infantry, with the exception of the outpost on the St. Georges St. Juvin road. These lines were held as on the night of October 14-15, with contact to both flanks. [2, 63, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150]
In the center, on the front of the 325th Infantry, while the front-line troops were awaiting the hour of attack, the enemy advanced behind a heavy barrage about 7 a. m. and drove portions of the regiment almost to the St. Georges St. Juvin road. Companies A and C counterattacked at once with the bayonet, and expelled the enemy. By 7:30 a. m. the line was restored. Reorganization took place during the morning, and attempts to advance were made during the afternoon. About 3 p. m. a mixed group of the 1st and 3d Battalions advanced to Ravin aux Pierres, and leading elements succeeded in crossing the ravine, but these positions could not be held, and the troops returned to the line of the night of October 14-15. About 7 p. m. the 3d Battalion relieved the 1st Battalion on this line, and the 1st and 2d Battalions went to the rear for reorganization. Contact was maintained to both flanks during the night. [2, 100, 101, 118, 151]
When the hostile counterattack struck the front of the 326th Infantry about 7 a. m., the 1st Battalion was not yet in position to pass through the 3d Battalion, as ordered for the morning attack. The hostile infantry thrust failed against the front of the 3d Battalion in position on the St. Georges St. Juvin road, having been broken up largely by the fire of the Machine-Gun Company, 325th Infantry, on Côte 182. Not waiting for the scheduled passage of lines by the 1st Battalion, the 3d Battalion attacked to the northwest about 7:30 a. m., and by noon succeeded in reaching the eastern slopes of Côte 182 and the German trenches on the hill south of Ravin aux Pierres. About 2:30 p. m. the 1st Battalion executed the scheduled passage of lines, and elements of that battalion succeeded in reaching Ravin aux Pierres in the late afternoon. Heavy machine-gun fire was received, however, and no positions in the vicinity of the ravine could be held. The line for the night was formed across the valley between the St. Georges St. Juvin road and Côte 182, with the right advanced about 150 meters and the left advanced on Côte 182 about 500 meters from the positions of the night of October 14-15. Contact was maintained with the 325th Infantry to the right. There was no liaison with the front line of the 77th Division to the left. [2, 63, 101, 114, 118, 152]
The I Corps ordered the 78th Division to relieve the 77th Division during the night of October 15-16. The relief was completed during the day of October 16. [58, 153]
At 9 p. m. the I Corps issued field orders directing a resumption of the attack at 6 a. m., October 16, to the line, St. Georges (excl.) Moulin de Champigneulle. Divisions were to advance independently to this line and, upon reaching it, exploit to the front and maintain contact with the enemy. The 82d Division was ordered to support and protect the right of the 78th Division. [154]
Owing to heavy losses, the 82d Division at 10 p. m. ordered a reorganization of machine-gun units. It directed that, in each infantry brigade, the regimental machine-gun companies and one company from the brigade machine-gun battalion should be organized into one provisional machine-gun company. [155]
At 11 p. m. the division issued field orders to carry out the provisions of the corps orders. The 163d Infantry Brigade was directed to conform to the movements of the 78th Division, and to support and protect its right flank. The 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, was released from division reserve to the 163d Infantry Brigade to assist in the execution of this mission. The 164th Infantry Brigade was to conform to the advance of the 163d Infantry Brigade, and maintain liaison with it. The artillery preparation was to commence at 11 p. m., October 15. During the attack, the fire of all divisional artillery was to be regulated by the 163d Infantry Brigade. [156]
Oct. 16
On the right, the combined 1st and 2d Battalions, 327th Infantry, attacked on the morning of October 16 and advanced to the cemetery on the St. Georges - St. Juvin road, about 400 meters southwest of St. Georges. The 42d Division did not advance during the day. It therefore became necessary to face two support companies to the east in order to maintain contact and protect the right flank. During the afternoon, attempts were made to carry out instructions of the 164th Infantry Brigade which directed the consolidation of a line from the cemetery to the head of Ravin aux Pierres, but heavy machine-gun fire prevented this. The line was forced back to the St. Georges St. Juvin road. The position consolidated for the night extended from its junction with the 42d Division just southwest of point 206, to point 216 on the St. Georges St. Juvin road, thence southwest along the road for about 600 meters, where contact was maintained with the 25th Infantry in the vicinity of the small wood. [2, 63, 65, 118, 157, 158, 159, 160, 161]
In the center, the 325th Infantry attacked about 7:30 a. m., with its 3d Battalion leading. The enemy main line of resistance was a general east and west line through Moulin Mohin. In spite of heavy enemy fire, portions of the attacking units reached Ravin aux Pierres and, by 11:45 a. m., were preparing to attack across the ravine toward the woods 1,500 meters east of Moulin Mohin. Hostile resistance stiffened, and no progress was made during the afternoon. By 5:30 p. m. the advanced troops had withdrawn to the line formerly held, north of the St. Georges St. Juvin road. [2, 100, 101, 118, 162]
On the left, the 326th Infantry, with its 1st Battalion leading, attacked about the same time as the 325th Infantry. The troops moved northwest across the eastern slopes of Côte 182 against Champigneulle. Company A reached the southern outskirts of Champigneulle, but hostile shellfire forced it to withdraw. The company and other advanced troops, except a small detachment, withdrew, and by evening had returned to the former positions on the eastern slopes of Côte 182 and across the valley to the east. A small detachment of Company A was forced to take shelter at the railroad embankment about 500 meters south of the town. After dark it also withdrew. Contact was maintained with the 78th Division on Côte 182. [2, 50, 93, 114, 118, 163]
The remnants of the Machine-Gun Company, 325th Infantry, remained on Côte 182 during the day, supporting the attack of the 78th and 82d Divisions. They were withdrawn during the night of October 16-17. [2]
During that night the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, which had been attached to the 325th Infantry, relieved the 1st and 3d Battalions, 325th Infantry, between vertical grid lines 98 and 99. It gained contact with the 327th Infantry to the right and the 326th Infantry to the left. [93, 100, 164]
At 5:30 p. m. the I Corps issued field orders directing its divisions to complete the operation outlined in its field orders of October 15. No change was made in dispositions. A general east and west line 1-kilometer north of Fléville was designated as the line of resistance to be held in case of a heavy counter-attack. [165]
The 82d Division, in field orders issued at 10 p. m., ordered the attack resumed at 6:30 a. m., October 17. The 163d Infantry Brigade was to support and protect the right of the 78th Division by advancing its left to the ridge east of Champigneulle. The 164th Infantry Brigade was to defend the front it was then holding. [166]
Oct. 17
The 82d Division made no advance during the morning. [93, 100, 167]
About 12:50 p. m. the division ordered the 163d Infantry Brigade to place troops and machine guns to cover the valley of the Agron and the village of Champigneulle with fire, and also to cover the ground between the east edge of Bois des Loges and the Agron, if possible. The 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, was ordered from brigade reserve to accomplish this mission. About 6:45 p. m. it advanced east of Côte 182, to-ward Champigneulle and the ridge to the east of the town. The battalion had progressed only about 500 meters beyond the lines of the 326th Infantry when it came under heavy fire. Under brigade orders, it retired through the lines of that regiment to brigade reserve. [101, 118]
The line of the 82d Division remained the same as during the night of October 16-17. Contact was maintained within the division and to both flanks. [50, 118]
At 6 p. m. the I Corps issued field orders for the resumption of the attack at 6:30 a. m., October 18, with no change in the mission of the 82d Division. A new left boundary was pro-vided, effective at 5 a. m., October 18, as follows: Châtel-Chéhéry (excl.) Marcq (incl.) Champigneulle (incl.) thence generally northwest. [168]
At 10 p. m. the 82d Division ordered the 163d Infantry Brigade to relieve troops of the 78th Division in the new extension to the west. One battalion, with one machine-gun company, was ordered to make the relief, which was to be completed by 5 a. m., October 18. Patrols from this battalion, which became the left battalion of the division, were to maintain contact with the right of the 78th Division, and be prepared to move forward with that division. The 164th Infantry Brigade was ordered to extend its zone of action to the left about 1 kilometer, and to make the necessary dispositions to accomplish this by 5 a. m., October 18 [169]
The 164th Infantry Brigade issued field orders directing the combination of the 327th and 328th Infantry Regiments into three groups of approximately equal strength. These groups were to hold the front line, support line and reserve line, making daily relief late in the afternoon. The 328th Infantry was ordered to relieve the combined 1st and 2d Battalions, 327th Infantry, during the afternoon of October 17. This relief took place as scheduled. At 11:55 p. m. the brigade ordered the extension westward to the new brigade left boundary. [170, 171, 172, 173]
Oct. 18
About 5 a. m., October 18, the 328th Infantry extended approximately 400 meters to the left and took over the positions vacated by the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, which in turn moved to the left about the same distance. [2, 100, 174]
At 4 a. m., on the extreme left, the 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, which had been released from brigade reserve and attached to the 326th Infantry, commenced the relief of troops of the 78th Division on Côte 182. The relief was completed about 7 a. m. Company G was placed west of the Agron, about 900 meters north of Moulin d'en Bas. It established contact in that vicinity with support troops of the 78th Division, and liaison, by patrols, with the front line of that division in the southeast corner of Bois des Loges. The positions taken over by the remainder of the battalion were in contact with those of the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, which was still attached to the 325th Infantry, on the eastern slope of the hill, and extended east and west about 600 meters along the military crest of Côte 182. The 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, did not advance beyond the lines formerly held by the 78th Division. [2, 100, 101, 114]
The 163d Infantry Brigade occupied the new position as follows:
|
2d Battalion, 325th Infantry 1st Battalion, 326th Infantry 3d Battalion, 326th Infantry |
2d Battalion, 326th Infantry 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry 3d Battalion, 325th Infantry |
The I Corps, in field orders issued at 4 p. m., ordered the operation continued. No changes were made in the mission or boundaries of the 82d Division. [176]
Oct. 19
No offensive action occurred in the zone of the 164th Infantry Brigade on October 19, and no change in lines was made. The prescribed daily relief of the front line was executed by one of the three groups of the 327th and 328th Infantry Regiments. [177]
During the morning Company G, 325th Infantry, west of the Agron, reconnoitered for possible routes of advance on Champigneulle, and an attack was planned for 4:30 p. m. The 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, with the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, echeloned to its right rear to protect the right flank, was to attack Champigneulle and the ridge to the east, for the purpose of easing the hostile pressure on the 78th Division in Bois des Loges. The attack commenced as scheduled supported by fire from Company G, 325th Infantry, west of the Agron. A few leading elements on the right succeeded in crossing Ravin aux Pierres, but hostile fire prevented a general advance. At 6 p. m. the attack was discontinued. The advanced troops withdrew to their former positions, and the line at midnight was the same as that of the preceding day. Company G, 325th Infantry, withdrew from its positions west of the Agron and rejoined its battalion on Côte 182 by dawn, October 20. [2, 101, 114, 178]
In field orders issued at 4:30 p. m. the I Corps ordered its divisions to improve their positions on the following day in preparation for a general advance to be made later. The 82d Division was ordered to deny the enemy the use of the trench system east and northeast of Moulin Mohin, and to continue to support and protect the right of the 78th Division. [179]
Oct. 20
Early on the morning of October 20, the 78th Division withdrew from Bois des Loges, and the right of its line took up a position along the St. Juvin Grand-Pré road, just south-west of Moulin d'en Bas. The area between the positions of the 82d Division on Côte 182 and the right of the 78th Division was not occupied by troops; but liaison across this gap was maintained by patrols. [2, 180, 181, 182]
At 5 p. m. the I Corps ordered its divisions to continue to improve their positions by local operations on October 21, in preparation for a general attack. The 82d Division was specifically ordered to develop the hostile main line of resistance by pushing forward strong exploitation detachments, and to seize and hold all advantageous ground from which the enemy might be driven. [183]
The 82d Division, at 9 p. m., ordered its infantry brigades to carry out local operations, but cautioned them not to engage in serious combat nor bring on a general attack. An artillery regiment was placed at the disposal of each brigade, and additional machine-gun support was provided. [184]
The 164th Infantry Brigade ordered strong patrols to be pushed forward to seize and hold the woods north of the East End of Ravin aux Pierres. The attack was to be preceded by a half-hour artillery preparation, commencing at 8 a. m. this preparation was to be followed by harassing fire on sensitive points. The 163d Infantry Brigade directed the 325th Infantry to employ one company to seize and hold Ravin aux Pierres and the ground to the north. The regiment was also to send a detachment of one officer and 40 men to infiltrate into Ravin aux Pierres from the ravine east of Côte 182. These operations were to commence at 6 a. m. the troops engaged were to be furnished by the support battalions. Artillery and machine- gun support was provided for. [185, 186]
The 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, and the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, reverted to the control of their regiments, except portions of Company H, 326th Infantry, which remained temporarily with the 325th Infantry. [2, 93]
Oct. 21
The 3d Battalion, 326th Infantry, relieved the 1st Battalion, 326th Infantry, before daylight, October 21. The, latter had previously relieved the 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, in the front line. The 3d Battalion, 325th Infantry, relieved the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, in its front line, preparatory to the movements scheduled. The forward movement took place as ordered, little opposition being encountered. A new line was formed on the southern slope of the ridge north of Ravin aux Pierres. Later in the day the 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry, and portions of Company H, 326th Infantry, occupied this position, which was organized as a strongpoint. In the afternoon the 328th Infantry advanced to a line running slightly north of west from its trenches on the road 800 meters southwest of St. Georges. Liaison was established with the troops across the head of Ravin aux Pierres. Contact was maintained with the 42d Division as before. [2, 100, 187]
The 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry, took over a position on Côte 182, and maintained liaison, by patrols, with the 78th Division near Moulin d'en Bas. This position was extended around the western slope of Côte 182. The valley between Côte 182 and the positions north of Ravin aux Pierres was covered by fire, but owing to the nature of the ground, no front-line communication was maintained. [2]
At 5 p. m. the I Corps announced that the First Army was continuing its preparation for a general attack, and that the divisions of the I Corps were to improve their positions by local operations on October 22. The 82d Division was ordered to maintain strong combat liaison with the 42d Division, and to advance its right to support and protect the left of the latter if it should attack. The corps also ordered that this pause in the general advance was to be used to reorganize, replenish supplies, rest troops and make dispositions of forces to meet possible counterattacks. [188]
Oct. 22
Early in the morning of October 22, the 82d Division notified its infantry brigades that the daily relief of front-line units would be discontinued, and that thereafter reliefs would take place only once in each 48-hour period. [118]
No change of lines occurred during the day. Contact and liaison on the right and left flanks respectively were maintained as on October 21. [189]
Oct. 23- Nov. 2
No activity, other than routine reliefs and patrolling, occurred during the period from October 23 to 31. The corps and division field orders during this period merely called for local operations in preparation for a general attack. Contact was maintained with the 42d Division to the right, and liaison with the 78th Division to the left, across the gap between Côte 182 and Moulin d'en Bas. [50, 190, 191]
At midnight, October 28, the I Corps issued field orders outlining a general attack, prior to which, the 80th and 77th Divisions were to take over the sector of the 82d Division. This order did not prescribe the details of the relief. At 9 a. m., October 30, the I Corps ordered the relief of the 82d Division. This order prescribed that the 80th Division should relieve the 82d Division from the divisional right boundary west to vertical grid line 98 at midnight, October 30; and that the 77th Division should relieve the remainder of the 82d Division at the same time. An outpost screen of troops of the 82d Division was to remain under command of the 80th and 77th Divisions until relieved by these divisions. The 157th Field Artillery Brigade and 307th Ammunition Train were to remain in the sector under the command of the 80th Division. [192, 193]
The division field orders provided that the screen, left under command of the incoming divisions, would consist of the following: a provisional battalion of the 328th Infantry; the 3d Battalion, 325th Infantry; and the 2d Battalion, 326th Infantry. [194]
The rear elements of the division, less the artillery and ammunition train, were relieved during the night of October 30-31. Command passed to the 80th and 77th Divisions at 6 a. m., October 31. The outpost screen was relieved about 10 p. m. [50, 195]
After being relieved, the division assembled in the Argonne Forest near Champ Mahaut, and on November 2 proceeded to La Chalade and Les Islettes. [1]
Nov. 3, 1918- June 1919
The division remained at La Chalade and Les Islettes on November 3, and then proceeded, by successive concentrations at the 5th (Vaucouleurs) and 3d (Bourmont) Training Areas to the 10th (Prauthoy) Training Area, which was reached on November 16. Here the artillery and the ammunition train June rejoined on December 17. On February 9, 1919, the first unit of the division, the 307th Trench-Mortar Battery, sailed from Brest en route to the United States. [1]
The division moved to the Bordeaux area on February 26, 1919. The next units to embark for the United States sailed on April 22. The last element of the division arrived in New York on June 6. [1]
