Calvin Powell (L)
James Toliver (R) Co. A, 23rd Ala. Infantry
Compliments of Alabama Confederate Images
Identified as Pvt. Calvin Powell, Company
H, 42nd Alabama Infantry and Company H, 38th Alabama Infantry on the left and
his brother Cpl. James Toliver Powell, Company A, 23rd Alabama Infantry.
Calvin enlisted on 19 April 1862 at Fort Gaines, Alabama in to the 42nd Alabama
Infantry. It appears he was then transferred to the 38th Alabama Infantry. He
was captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee.
James was a married planter when he enlisted at Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama
on 12 September 1861 in to the 23rd Alabama. His records state he died on 28
November 1864, being mortally wounded at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee.
However, the Battle of Franklin was fought on 30 November 1864. The Battle of
Spring Hill was fought on 29 November. It seems most plausible that he was
either killed outright or mortally wounded in fighting at Columbia, Tennessee.
Like many other Confederate soldiers, the military records for these brothers
seem to be very confusing, but this seems to be the best interpretation of their
service.
